Day Two & Day Three

Aidan is adjusting well to hospital routine. I asked him on Wednesday, "Where would you rather be, here in hospital all hooked up with wires and tubes and spending your time sleeping, reading books and watching videos, or at school doing math?"

"Well," he said, "if it wasn't for the lab people taking my blood, and me feeling dizzy sometimes . . . ."

Tomorrow, Friday, he is having a PICC line installed. (Peripherally Inserted Central Catheter) This means sliding a long, thin flexible tube into a vein in his upper arm and pushing it through until it reaches a large vein just above his heart.

It is the best way, with the least complications, to administer antibiotics over an extended period of time. In the case of children it is usually done under anesthesia--something Aidan is not looking forward to since it usually means being nauseous and vomiting afterwards. But the alternative is not so great either!

Aidan Will Receive Antibiotics via PICC line for Three Months
