Some Sad News About Aidan:

Since the last update in February, 2012, Aidan has been doing so well there was not much to report. He still has seizures during times of stress or when he is tired, but he has not had a “drop to the floor” type of convulsive seizure for many months. He didn't need a cane anymore to walk and was looking forward to a trip to Ontario December 3, to start training and bonding with a special service dog to be with him.

Just last week, however, Aidan’s skull developed some soft spots along the scar lines of the surgery, a very rare occurrence after two years of healing. An MRI this showed a growing infection in the skull bone. It has not penetrated or infected the lining of the brain. Aidan is slated for emergency surgery in the first week of December and is facing a three-month recovery with antibiotics administered through an IV line directly to his heart. Please pray hard for this situation.

It is extremely demoralizing for Aidan. For months he had been looking forward to bonding with a highly trained seizure response dog during three weeks of training in Oakville, ON. The  Lions Foundation  had granted him a dog trained to detect imminent seizures and to stand by him calling attention to his need. Having a highly trained dog with him at all times would have given Aidan the liberty to go about by himself without an adult constantly nearby. We had been so happy for him. All the plans had been made for Jo and Aidan and his mom to leave in a few days to take this bonding training together.

But now all this is cancelled. Instead of getting a long term canine friend Aidan will be undergoing surgery and possibly spending Christmas in hospital again. Pray for the surgeons, they hope to be minimally invasive, cutting and lifting the affected part of the skull and scraping the infection out without removing a large part of his skull and scrubbing it.

This is a faith-testing time for all of us. It is hard to keep on trusting God’s goodness and keep praying when it seems that our prayers for Aidan seem to turn out not for good but for the worst case scenario. This may sound a bit pessimistic, but that is how we feel. The entire family, along with all the friends that love Aidan are feeling extremely sorry for him. So do pray for Aidan, the medical team and all the rest of us.
